Celebrating Her: Yuki Oshima of OWA Yurika

OWA YURIKA brings together London’s cutting-edge design aesthetic with luxury textiles and meticulous attention to detail.

The result is a playful yet elevated childrenswear brand with character and charm.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we chat to Yuriko about the brand, her role as an entrepreneur, a mother and a daughter.

1. What is your favourite thing to do with your family?
These days I adore going out to lunches with Honor, just the two of us. It's fascinating that at three, we can already have a little girly chat about what she did on the day at the nursery, her friends etc... I also love going on holidays, normally at sunny destinations with beaches. We are taking her on her first skiing trip this weekend, which should be great fun!

2. What is the one book you think every child should read?
Swimmy by Leo Lionni - I enjoyed it when my mother used to read it to my brother and I. It's such an inspiring story.

3. What is your go-to children’s lullaby?
Schubert's lullaby (D.498) with Japanese lyrics.

4. What is your favourite children’s outfit? And does little Honor agree?
I like a cute little dress for her as it's convenient to dress her in the morning before nursery. Honor's already so opinionated about what she wants to wear and loves making her own decisions. I didn’t realise young children already have such a sense of style.

5. What is the best style tip you would impart to your children?
Be individual and express who you are, and whatever you choose to wear, ensure they are made out of the best materials for comfort and function.

6. If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A very simple and comfortable cotton dress with a fun printed silk scarf and some ballet flats.

7. What is the best part about working together as part of a mother-daughter team?
Since we are not based in the same cities (Tokyo and London), it has given us more reason to spend time together, be it attending trade shows or having design meetings, which has been such a treat. Also it's been incredible to realise and rediscover my mother's exceptional strengths, wisdom and discipline in dealing with various situations and people. She really is a remarkable woman.

8. What are some lessons on how to empower women in their own lives that you have learnt from your own personal experiences?
We can be critical of ourselves by comparing ourselves to others. It's so important to focus on the positive and give yourself a pat on the shoulder. We are all so good at being multi-tasking superwomen and we should be proud of ourselves.

9. What is your most treasured possession from your kids?
The drawing of an umbrella Honor did at the age of two on a store receipt. I was so amazed as it was so accurate!

10. Favourite holiday destination?
Hawaii...we have a family home there and it's my favourite place on the planet and Honor loves it.

11. Your ideal holiday with the family would be...
When Honor gets slightly older, I would love to take her on an adventurous safari trip in Africa. We adore animals! She had a little taster with a mini safari experience in South Africa on our last holiday and she can't stop talking about it.

12. What's next for OWA YURIKA?
We would like to increase our offer in the early years category, with ranges for 0-4 year olds. We will also expand into designing accessories.
